The regeneration of Woodford Aerodrome lifts off as plans for sustainable community are given the go ahead by Stockport Council.
The council’s Planning and Highways Regulation Committee last night approved an outline planning application by Harrow Estates, Redrow Homes and Avro Heritage, to build up to 950 high-quality homes on the previously-developed site.

Redevelopment of Woodford Aerodrome – the former home of BAE Systems – will also feature a new primary school; employment area; pub; shops; community facilities; and areas of open and recreational space.
The application, approved during an extraordinary meeting at the Town Hall, also provides details of the first phase of the development, which includes 145 homes and a village green.
Mike Riding, Managing Director of Harrow Estates, said:
“We are naturally thrilled that our ambitious plans for Woodford Aerodrome can finally begin, after years of preparation and consultation.
“The site provides a unique opportunity to deliver a high quality and sustainable community that meets the growing need for housing in Stockport, and I am pleased that councillors have recognised this.
“These plans have been subject to some of the most extensive consultation we have ever carried out. We’ve taken the views of a wide range of people on board and designed a development that will not only be an asset for Stockport, but pays tribute to the former use of the site.
“We’ve had considerable interest in the properties already and are keen to deliver on our vision for the Woodford Aerodrome.”
It is anticipated that demolition of the existing buildings on the site will begin later this year, with construction of the first phase to begin in 2015. Development of the site is projected to take place over a nine-year period, with the subsequent stages subject to further detailed planning applications.
