Stockport authors and winners of this year’s Stockport Council Children’s Book Awards have been announced at a special presentation event after Stockport children, aged three to 16 years old, from across the borough, read a total of 16 contemporary books and then voted for their favourite authors and illustrators.
The presentation evening was held at Edgeley Park on Wednesday 17th September where the winners were:
- Best Picture Book: Open Very Carefully- A Book with Bite! by Nicola O’Byrne and Nick Bromley
- Best Read for Juniors: Ethan’s Voice by Rachel Carter
- Best Teen read: Chasing the Dark by Sam Hepburn
Present to receive their awards were pictured (left to right) Rachel Carter, Sam Hepburn and Nicola O’Byrne with their prizes who each winner received a piece of original artwork created in local schools.
The event was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Stockport, Councillor Kevin Hogg and Mrs Kathleen Hogg who presented awards to Rosie Kenworthy from St George’s CE Primary who won the Reader of the Year Award; Kendal Ordish from St George’s CE Primary and Rebecca Haigh from Hursthead Junior School who were jointly crowned as Stockport’s Most Improved Readers of the Year.
Stockport Children’s Book Awards are highly regarded by the publishing industry as the winners are selected exclusively by children.
Councillor Iain Roberts, Stockport Council’s Executive Councillor, Corporate, Customer and Community Services, said:
“The awards ceremony was a night to celebrate, not just finding out which of the excellent authors had won but about applauding a commitment to books and reading.”
