An awards ceremony organised by Stockport Council was held at the Town Hall to celebrate the achievements of volunteers and community groups.
Over a hundred people attended the Central Take Part Volunteer Awards event which was held on Friday 8th March.
Councillor Mark Weldon, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Supporting Communities, said: “The event was very well attended and aimed to recognise and celebrate the achievements of volunteer and community groups over the past 12 months from the central area of Stockport.”

The awards were presented in four categories: Volunteer of the Year; Community Group of the Year; Special Contribution to Central; and Lifetime Contribution to Central.
Almost 70 nomination forms were completed for 32 volunteers and community groups. The winners were chosen by an independent panel.
The awards were given to:
- Volunteer of the Year (Winner) – Leanne Birrell
- Volunteer of the Year (Highly Commended) – Dave Greeves
- Community Group of the Year (Winner) – York Street Residents Association
- Community Group of the Year (Highly Commended) – SWAGGA
- Special Contribution to Central (Winner) – Bernard Kivel
- Special Contribution to Central (Highly Commended) – John Cairns
In addition, guests also paid tribute to the late Shirley Hollinshead whose work in the community, over many years, was honoured in a Lifetime Contribution to Central Award, which was accepted by her family.
