Posing with a decorated cake marking the occasion, a very excited Vernon Bear sent the society’s first ever tweet on Monday as it launched its Twitter account: @VernonStockport. The message read; “Very proud to send the Vernon’s first tweet – would have been yesterday if my smartphone was paw-friendly! #bearproblems”

Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character messages called Tweets. The network will allow the Vernon to engage with other Twitter members in real-time, providing a platform to discuss the Jubilee Fund, community events and other topics relevant to the Society’s members and followers.
Says Ian Keeling, the Vernon’s Head of Sales and Marketing:
“A significant proportion of our customers are already using Twitter and therefore our presence on the network will provide us with another effective means of communication. We plan to keep our tweets interesting and relevant to both our customers and the wider Stockport community” .
On its Twitter profile, the Vernon’s tag line reads: “Friendly Stockport based independent Building Society with six local branches. Providing mortgages, savings and insurance.”
The news comes just days before the society opens its application process to local causes and charities for a share of its £10,000 Jubilee Fund.
