Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted in three categories at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Patient Safety Awards in recognition of the trust’s efforts in improving care.
The trust, which operates Stepping Hill Hospital and other NHS services in the borough, has been named a finalist for its innovations in improving ambulance turnover, treating patients with suspected delirium, and mental health services for both patients and staff.
The shortlisting for Quality Improvement Initiative of the Year recognises Stepping Hill’s new Rapid Assessment Unit and collaboration with the North West Ambulance Service that has reduced queueing ahead of admission to A&E. The project has seen the hospital rise from 21st place in the region to 6th place for ambulance waiting times.
A new person-centred approach to support patients with suspected delirium is a finalist in the Deteriorating Patients and Rapid Response Initiative of the Year category, which now sees patients receive a rapid clinical assessment in the community instead of a hospital admission. The project is a joint initiative alongside Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, who run mental health services in the area.
A second partnership project with Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is also shortlisted for the Best Use of Integrated Care and Partnership Working in Patient Safety Award. The project has aimed to embed a culture of improvement within mental health services for both patients and NHS workers, and has delivered a Mental Health First Aider Network across the trust and seen staff take part in targeted training courses.
Karen James OBE, Chief Executive for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said:
“Patient safety is at the heart of the care we provide, so I am delighted our efforts in have been recognised at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards. These are three separate using innovative new techniques to ensure we can provide the best and safest care we can together with our partners, and I wish them all every success at the awards.”
The Winners of the HSJ Patient Safety Awards will be selected ahead of the ceremony, which will take place as part of the Patient Safety Congress and Awards in Manchester in September 2022.
