The Big Stockport Event Series, sponsored by Electricity North West is back for 2014, Stockport’s very own summer sporting series. The Big Event Series was launched two years ago by Life Leisure which runs sports and leisure facilities across Stockport, as a lasting legacy to the London Olympics. The aim was to provide a fabulous opportunity for everyone in the local community to get involved in a great sporting event, right on their doorstep.
The Big Stockport Swim will kick of the Series on Saturday 26th July with both a family friendly event and an elite swimming event. The Big Stockport 10km Walk is on Sunday 7th September with the Big Stockport 10km Run completing the series on Sunday 21st September. You can take part in all or any of the events; the series offers something for everyone, whether you are a competitive athlete, or would just enjoy a day out with family and friends.
Neil Bardsley, Sport Development Manager at Life Leisure commented, “This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone in Stockport to get involved in sport and physical activity, no matter what their fitness level. The events are a great way to showcase Stockport and put the town firmly on the map in terms of mass participation sporting events.”
He continued, “We want everyone to be part of it and also encourage more and more residents to use the events as motivation to get into physical activity.”
Life Leisure Grand Central will host the Big Stockport Swim commencing at 1.30pm with the ‘Challenge Yourself Swim’ followed by the elite event at 4.30pm, with distances of 1.5km, 3.8km and 5km options.

The Big Stockport 10k Run, sponsored by Orbit Developments is the closing event of this year’s series is aimed at runners aged 16+, of all abilities. This year, local teams of 8 are also invited to enter, there will be a fantastic goody bag for all runners and prizes for men’s, women’s and team categories.
Laura Mylotte, from Life Leisure said, “Participants can use their chosen event to fundraise for a charity of their choice and we would urge local charities to also get involved to help raise money for their cause. We are thrilled that the Big Event is now firmly on Stockport’s annual calendar and we expect the event will be bigger and better than last year. We are attracting both the local community and people from further afield who want to take part, helping to promote the great town of Stockport!”
