TfGM and GMP expand speed enforcement fleet as part of work to end road deaths

Funding from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) will increase the ability of Greater Manchester Police to address excessive and dangerous speeding with the introduction of two new speed enforcement vehicles.

This investment, on behalf of the Greater Manchester Road Safety Partnership, directly supports the city-region’s Vision Zero strategy to eliminate all deaths and life-changing injuries on Greater Manchester’s Roads.

Expansion of the speed enforcement fleet from three to five will enable a wider and more visible enforcement presence across all ten boroughs, targeting locations where community concerns, data and intelligence identified speeding as a persistent risk. Excess speed remains one of the “fatal four” factors most associated with people being killed or seriously injured on Greater Manchester’s roads.

Camera Enforcement Team Leader, Michael Hewitt, said:

“These additional vehicles represent a significant enhancement to our operational capacity. Increasing our fleet to five dedicated enforcement vehicles means we can be present in more locations, more often, targeting those areas where speeding presents the greatest danger to our communities.

“Visible enforcement remains a key part of changing driver behaviours and supporting Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero objectives.”

“Speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal and life-changing injuries across the UK, and the difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death.

“In Greater Manchester we want to reduce all road casualties to zero by 2040 as part of our Vision Zero approach. These new speed enforcement vehicles will provide a visible deterrent to discourage dangerous driving behaviour, supporting GMP’s crucial role in helping us realise our Vision Zero ambition.”
