At the launch of the Greater Manchester Healthier Catering Award Scheme in Stockport, ten local companies will receive an inaugural award.
The scheme, administered in the borough by Stockport Council, recognises caterers who meet certain standards and who have achieved a food hygiene rating of 3 or above, making it easier for customers to choose healthier and safer food.
Diets which are high in saturated fats, trans fats and salt have been linked to obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. The Healthier Catering Award Scheme supports the principles of the Public Health Responsibility Deal which encourages food manufacturers and retailers to reduce the amount of salt and saturated fat in their products and provide calorie labelling and a wider range of fruit and vegetables to increase choice.
The companies and level of awards are:
Excellence: Taylor’s Fish and Chips, Woodley Precinct;
Achievement: Pulse Bistro, Stockport Sports Village, Woodley; The Saxon Suite, Stockport Sports Village, Woodley; The Friary, Castle St, Edgeley; Istanbul Grill, Gatley Road, Cheadle; Stockport Road Chippy, Stockport Road, Cheadle Heath.
Commitment: Startpoint Coffee Shop, Woodley Precinct; Matt’s Plaice, Berrycroft Lane, Romiley; Sols Take-away, Finney Lane, Heald Green; Village Chippy, Green Lane, Heaton Norris.
Councillor John Pantall, Executive Member for Health and Well Being, will present the awards at Stockport Sports Village on 22nd January.
Recipients receive a certificate, window sticker and a listing on the Greater Manchester Healthier Catering Award website: www.healthiercatering.co.uk
Councillor Pantall said:
“I would like to congratulate those businesses who are the first to receive Healthier Catering Scheme Awards in Stockport. Research shows that consumers want healthier options when they eat out. The awards are a ‘badge of excellence’ and a strong selling point for businesses who are committed to good food hygiene standards and healthier menu choices as they strive to retain their existing customer base and attract new customers.”
