Who represents you on your council matters. It’s these people who make decisions about services that will impact the borough you love. Want to have your say? Stockport Council is encouraging everyone in the borough to register to vote in the upcoming local elections, to be held on 6th May 2021.
As well as voting for representatives on the council, Stockport residents can also have their say in the Greater Manchester mayoral election, which takes place on the same day.
Here are some key dates to remember:
- Register to vote by 19th April 2021. You can do this in just 5 minutes online, and all you’ll need is your national insurance number.
- If you are unable to vote in person, for example if you are shielding, you can apply for a postal vote. Make sure you do this by 5pm on 20th April 2021.
- If you’d prefer, you can register to vote by proxy (someone else casts a vote on your behalf). The deadline to register for proxy voting is 5pm on 27th April 2021.
- Polling stations are open from 7am – 10pm on 6th May 2021. You don’t need your polling card to vote, so don’t worry if you misplace it!
Pam Smith, Returning Officer at Stockport Council, said:
It’s been a tough year for everyone, and the pandemic has highlighted the importance of our public services. It’s so important that everyone who lives in Stockport exercises their right to vote, to help shape the future of our brilliant borough.”
“Talk to your family and friends, and make sure everyone you know is on the electoral register by 19th April. You don’t want to miss out on the chance to make your voice heard!”
Alisa Irvine, Director of Electoral Administration and Guidance at the Electoral Commission, added:
You can’t have your say in these important elections unless you are registered to vote. It’s quick and easy – it takes just five minutes online at www.gov.uk/registertovote.
“If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered to vote.
“If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don’t need to take any action.”
