Stockport volunteer, Roger Boyer, scooped the Unsung Hero award at this year’s Greater Manchester Sports awards on 15th November. This award recognises long-term volunteers who have made a significant difference.
Roger has devoted his adult life to volunteering his time and expertise to Stockport Metro Swimming Club, local church, charities and the Cheshire County & Northern County Swimming Associations. Over 44 years he has supported through officiating at swim meets, producing results and statistical reports and he is currently the President of the Club. Over the last two years he has co-ordinated the resubmission of the Swim Mark accreditation.
The Greater Manchester Sports Awards returned to Emirates Old Trafford for their 19th outing, shining a spotlight on the role sport and physical activity play in changing lives. The awards celebrate the outstanding talent, hard work and passion of those who go the extra mile to deliver community grassroots sport across the city region.
Winners and guests enjoyed a drinks reception and three course dinner as part of an evening bursting with inspirational stories, including Kirsty Rowlinson-Groves, the winner of the prestigious Mayor’s Award. An expert fitness instructor, Kirsty developed and led the successful CAN:Move cancer exercise referral scheme in Salford.
