OUTSTANDING students from Stockport College were recognised during a recent awards ceremony at the Peter Barkworth Theatre.
Proud teachers, parents and award winners joined in the annual celebrations which honoured a range of student achievements from the past year.
The annual awards evening provides an important opportunity for the College to recognise and honour some of the outstanding work including: Catering & Hospitality, Childhood Studies, Hair, Beauty and Media Make-up. Audience members were treated to a short video specially created to showcase the achievements of each area and also moments during their time of course which provided many smiles and laughs.
The students (pictured left) were nominated by their tutors for a variety of reasons including commitment to their studies, enthusiasm and determination.
One of the awards went to Helen Rogers, 44 from Congleton, a Level 3 Media Make-up students from the College who is no stranger to winning awards, it was only a few months ago when she stormed the prestigious WorldSkills competition where she secured a second place victory.
Talented Helen fought off tough competition when they competed against others from all over the country in the World Skills event which saw hundreds of contestants under strict assessments.
Helen said:
“The celebration awards has been my favourite College moment, I was so surprised! When I received an invitation to the event I kept on wondering what it was for – I couldn’t believe it was an awards ceremony I was so overwhelmed!”
Sous-Chef Paul Plumbley and Kirsty Ashman from Manchester City Football Club where specially invited to the ceremony to present awards for catering & hospitality achievement awards to Tyler Fyfe and Liam Davies.
Curriculum Manager Louise Stone said:
“Celebrating both the academic achievements and of course career successes of our talented students is something I am very privileged to be a part of each year.
“This is one of my favourite times of the year when we get the chance to celebrate our young students’ hard work and pure talent. To all of our award winners I wish them many congratulations on their success.
“Every student is special to us at Stockport College and we hope they have all the qualities needed to succeed in life – drive, commitment, professionalism and the ability to meet and conquer challenges head on in this tough and competitive climate.”
Louise Stone presented a special award to Childhood Studies student Saul Parsons who has worked tremendously hard during his time on the course, dedicating his spare time on the student council and working as a student ambassador.
A congenital heart condition diagnosed at birth meant that Saul had to spend long periods of his early years in hospital recovering from surgery.
But the 19-year-old student has never forgotten the invaluable part his old primary teachers played in ensuring he was able to keep up with his schooling. Now, he’s set to follow his life-long goal of a career in primary school teaching himself.
Saul Said:
“It’s great to be recognised with this award I aim to make an impact in the future. The experiences I went through made me realise how precious life is, and I want to help as many children as I can for as long as I can, because I know what it’s like missing so much time in those primary school years.
It’s great to be recognised with this award for social impact as it captures the essence of what we want to do as an organisation, and is a flavour of the social impact we hope to make in the future.”
The College Deputy Principal Karen Moss concluded the awards ceremony by praising the dedication of staff and all those who support the students to achieve at college, she added:
“It has been an exceptional year for our students. This awards evening recognises the dedication and expertise of the staff who, on a daily basis, make a significant contribution to improving the skill levels of young people and adult learners.”
