Following Wednesday’s budget, the BBC visited Stockport College to record and hear from the students how George Osborne’s announcements may impact on them.
The programme was broadcast from the college on the BBC News at 6pm live and the BBC News at 10pm.
Simon Andrews Principal and CEO of Stockport College said “Yesterday the College played host to the BBC who were covering the Budget and its perceived impact on the Northern Powerhouse. Reeta Chakrabareti talked to and interviewed a number of staff and students during the day. It was great to see the coverage on national television of our specialist vocational and technical resources supporting the education and training of some 5000 learners. “
17 years old construction student Harvey Brookes was interested to hear about the new tax free ISA, designed to help young people save for their first house or toward a pension. He said: “This will help me to build up money to get started in life”.
18 years old Haley Conwell agrees that the new ISA is a good idea but at the moment doesn’t have enough money to put in an ISA: “I like the idea of being given £1 for every £4 I save but it’s difficult to start saving yet. Any money I earn I spend on travel and food and general living.”
Simon added “The College is unique within Stockport as the only education and training provider to specialise in skills building in areas such as building and construction, plumbing, catering, hair, beauty and media makeup to name but a few.
“I am very proud to be a part of a fantastic College doing great things for Stockport and Greater Manchester.”
