Stockport shoppers contributing to Merseyway’s Giving Tree appeal have so far raised over £1,500 to support Ukrainian refugees arriving in the borough, the shopping centre has revealed.
Donations will be used to provide shopping vouchers to thirty families arriving in Stockport to escape conflict in Ukraine so they can purchase items needed to help them feel more at home in the borough.
The Giving Tree campaign in collaboration with the Stockport Ukrainian Club follows previous successful fundraisers at the Merseyway Shopping Centre that have helped provide Christmas gifts for disadvantaged young people in the area.
Located in the undercover mall outside Specsavers, visitors will be able to select a blue or yellow gift tag from a giant, white tree. Each tag will provide the name of a store where gift vouchers are available for purchase.
As of 26th April, over £1,500 vouchers had already been purchased by shoppers in Stockport town centre, with the fundraiser continuing until Friday 6th May. Participants can drop their gift voucher at the secure post box located in the same location, or the Merseyway management suite.
Earlier this month, Merseyway Centre Manager Victoria Nichol said of the launch of the Giving Tree campaign:
“Our Giving Tree has provided thousands of gifts to local people in previous years, and we’re confident our shoppers will be just as supportive with this campaign, helping us welcome Ukrainian families joining our local community and providing them with the essentials they need. All donations will be greatly welcomed and appreciated, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support.”
