Stockport primary school children are set to benefit from a healthier start to 2014 by taking part in the new Change4Life campaign.
As part of Stockport Council’s ‘Get Involved in a Healthier Stockport’ initiative, the Change4Life ‘Smart Swaps’ campaign aims to help families cut sugar and saturated fat from their everyday snacks, drinks and meals.
Primary schools in Stockport are being urged to encourage children to make two swaps, which are as follows:
- Swapping for a healthier less sugary breakfast
- Swapping to a healthy school lunch
All Stockport Primary Schools have been sent free ‘Smart Swaps Packs’ to help them get started. The packs were sent via the School Fruit and Veg Scheme and included teacher resource booklets and recipe cards to give out to parents.
Councillor John Pantall, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Health and Well Being, said:
“It is vitally important to encourage primary schools to take part in ‘Smart Swaps’. Encouraging children and their families to adopt a much healthier diet by making small but positive changes like reducing sugar intake can bring long lasting health benefits. This can really help us in Stockport, where in line with the national trend, obesity more than doubles, between children starting in reception and leaving primary school in Year 6.”

‘Smart Swaps’ is just one of the ways in which people can get involved in a healthier Stockport. Positive changes can also be stopping smoking, cutting down on alcohol, being more active and improving well-being.
