Families in Offerton received hands-on training in sustainable growing as part of the Sustainable Living Stockport Project, which aims to support the communities involved to become more environmentally sustainable.
The project is working with groups in Romiley and Cheadle as well as Dial Park Allotment Association in Offerton, to engage and enthuse local families about sustainable food growing. Their first training workshop took place last Wednesday, when residents of all ages were taught about seasonal growing techniques and how to use recycled material for potting and labelling.
Sustainable Living Stockport is funded by Stockport Council and delivered by Groundwork Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford (MSSTT) in partnership with MMU’s Research Institute of Health and Social Change.
The project is working throughout Stockport to help local residents further understand the impacts of climate change and will encourage them to set up community action groups, which will help tackle their overall environmental impact. The groups area of focus could range from cutting fuel bills to reducing waste and will share the common initiative of creating a sustainable future for Stockport.
A second Family Growing workshop will be taking place on Wednesday 28th August at 11-1pm, followed by an Open Day at the Allotments on Dial Park Road, Offerton on Sunday 8th September 11am-2pm.
