The death of the Labour MP Jo Cox following an attack in her own parliamentary constituency has deeply saddened labour run Stockport Council.
Jo Cox had become a prominent Labour MP since she was elected to represent Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire in May 2015.
A former Head of Policy for Oxfam she worked as an advisor to Sarah Brown and Baroness Kinnock. She was also the national chair of Labour Women’s Network and a senior advisor to the Freedom Fund, an anti-slavery charity.
Stockport has paid tribute to the MP by lowering of the flag to half-mast outside the town hall this morning.
Councillor Alex Ganotis, Leader of the Stockport Council said: “The whole of Stockport will be in a state of shock at the appalling murder of Jo Cox, a hard-working local MP who was serving her community when a devastating and unprovoked attack took place on Thursday.
“Jo Cox had a long-standing record of public service having worked for Oxfam and anti-slavery charity, the Freedom Fund, and was born and raised in Batley and Spen before being elected as the local MP last year.
‘Jo was a principled parliamentarian who I know was a passionate advocate for social justice, helping the developing world and strengthening human rights across the globe.
“At this extremely difficult time our thoughts are with Jo’s husband Brendan and their two young children who I wish to send my deepest condolences to on behalf of the people of Stockport.”
