Stockport Council is supporting a regional adoption campaign in a bid to recruit more adopters.
Adopt North West, a collaboration between 22 of the regions local authorities including Stockport Council, is launching the campaign today,on 10th March, as part of the first ever North West Adoption Week.
The core message ‘you can adopt’ focusses on busting the myths around adoption and aims to educate people to help them overcome common misconceptions that mean they often incorrectly rule themselves out.
The campaign will also look to highlight that it’s possible to adopt regardless of whether you’re single, over 50, already have biological children, your sexual orientation, are in full time employment, from any religion or are not a homeowner.
Councillor Wendy Meikle, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People, said:
“I’m delighted that we are supporting this campaign to recruit more much needed adopters. There are no blanket bans in adoption, so please don’t think we’ll turn you down because you’re over 50, single, or don’t own your own home. What we really need are people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life. People who can help a child recover from the reasons why they came into care and can help them go on to thrive in a new family.
“Initially, we are simply asking people to come forward and find out more about adoption. If you think you might have what it takes, please pick up the phone and call the Council’s Adoption Team or visit the website.”
Adopt North West has been created to help find forever families for the 623 children currently awaiting adoption in the region, and hopes to get adults thinking about adopting a child or children.
