Stockport College’s advances in virtual learning have allowed a degree student earn the best grade of her course, despite being housebound towards the end of her pregnancy.
Childhood Studies BA Hons student, Rebecca Jones, (pictured with new baby, Margot) was able to take advantage of Stockport College’s virtual learning environment while at home, which gives all students access to online resources, assessment materials, and the college’s eLibrary of books, journals and databases. Rebecca said:
I didn’t have the easiest of pregnancies and really suffered with towards the end. I had to take quite a lot of time off College, which isn’t ideal, but thanks to the tutors and the ongoing help online, I completed my foundation degree.
“I was 38 weeks pregnant when I submitted my first assignment of my Level 6 and I was induced at 39 weeks. As you can imagine having a young baby and trying to write a 4,000 word assignment is tricky, and can be stressful at times, but I know my tutor is on the other end of an email if I need him.”
Every student who enrols at the College gains immediate access online to personal and pastoral tutors, as well as in person, in addition to Learner Service staff, for support with finances, careers and overall wellbeing.
Childhood Studies BA Hons tutor, Controllah Gabi, is among Stockport College staff leading the way in virtual learning, posting his lessons on YouTube and making available electronic copies of books, such as The Dissertation, on download via Amazon. He said:
I’m incredibly proud of Rebecca’s achievements. She has proved that it is possible to follow your dreams no matter what happens in life. For all of our students, we endeavour to build a learning environment that transcends the four walls of the classroom.”
Rebecca added:
My ultimate ambition and aim is to secure a job, which I love, and that will allow me to give my daughter the very best start in life. I would highly recommend going to College to others for the helpful and supportive staff and the high quality of learning that is available on and offline.”
