A Stockport College tutor has been recognised as the best teacher at a national awards ceremony for the accountancy sector. Stephen Field, who teaches Association of Accountancy Technician (AAT) programmes at the Wellington Road campus, won ‘Public Sector Lecturer of the Year’ for the quality of his teaching by accountancy sector publication PQ magazine.

Stephen received the reward at the PQ magazine awards ceremony at Café du Paris in London on Tuesday evening. He had been shortlisted with four other teachers who represent further and higher education institutions from across the UK.
Stephen, from Nantwich, started his teaching career at Stockport College six years ago and ‘hasn’t looked back’ as he has helped countless students achieve their ambition of a career in accountancy.
Following a successful 22 year retail and commercial banking career Stephen pursued his interest in training and development when he worked as an AAT assessor with a training provider. He continued to update his skills and qualifications by embarking on the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) which he has studied ‘on and off’ for ten years.
His appointment at Stockport College has proved to be beneficial to both the students and the tutor himself.
Stephen said:
“Stockport College helped me with my own personal development by sponsoring me to complete the last two units of the ACCA qualifications. I am now a chartered accountant which has helped me deliver lessons to the highest standard. Knowing your stuff and being able to answer a wide range of questions contributes to the motivation and success of the students.”
The nomination for teacher of the year from PQ magazine reflects both the investment Stephen and his students have made in their learning.
Stephen said:
“It’s a great feeling helping other people achieve their goals. I am in touch with many former Stockport College students and it gives me great pleasure to follow their careers and progression to chartered status.’
