Stockport businesses are invited to take part in Greater Manchester’s Good Employment Week as it returns for its second year.
Taking place between 7th and 11th October, the event is the UK’s first such week dedicated to promoting good workplaces and employment practices, and has been organised by the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter. The week sees Charter supporters, members, equality panels and industry experts come together to address critical issues, with this year’s event focusing on the theme ‘Fair Work is Good Work.’
Ian MacArthur, Director of Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter explained:
“It’s natural to believe that hard work is central to whether or not you will be successful at work. However, subtle discrimination which is often written off as luck is on the other hand perceived as much less important, and with hindsight, we often overlook the role that chance has played. We need to ensure that everyone has the same opportunity at work and that employment prospects are not determined by the colour of your skin, your age, gender, your disability, sexuality or your postcode.
“This is why, for this year’s Good Employment Week, we have developed a game of online snakes and ladders – the ‘Game of Work’ – where a roll of the dice can demonstrate that small bits of luck can make or break your work experience and more importantly raise awareness that fair work practices will lead to happier and more productive employees.”
Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, addded:
“Its five years since we established the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter, and each year it has gone from strength to strength. We’ve built a movement of more than 700 employers who share the belief that good jobs lead to happier and healthier employees.
“From Monday 7th of October we will be celebrating our progress with businesses throughout the city-region. This is a fantastic opportunity to grow our movement, engage more employers and make the case for fair work, so that together we can raise employment standards here in Greater Manchester.”
Key events being held in Greater Manchester’s Good Employment Week include a Best Practice Conference on 10th October and events run by each of the city-region’s local equality panels. Businesses can register to attend online here.
The Good Employment Charter has 766 Supports and 124 Members, which together employer a workforce of 190,000 people across Greater Manchester, and 1.1 million nationwide.
