Businesses in Stockport are invited to pledge their support for creating workplace opportunities for young people, as part of Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s (GMCA) Young Person’s Guarantee.
The economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic has been worse for young people in Greater Manchester than other areas. Young people aged 16-24 are significantly more likely to be unemployed than other age groups, and more at risk of economic shocks and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham made a manifesto commitment to work with business and generate opportunities for young people in response to Covid-19.
As a starting point, GMCA will host a live streamed event on October 21st 3pm-5pm. The event will share with businesses in Stockport and across the whole of Greater Manchester the challenges facing young people, hear how they can get involved. Guest speakers on the day will include:
- Andy Burnham – Mayor of Greater Manchester
- Diane Modahl – Olympian and Commonwealth Games Gold medallist and Chair of the Youth Task Force
- Dr Robina Shah – Chief Ambassador to Mayor Andy Burnham’s Meet Your Future & Bridge GM and Deputy Lieutenant Greater Manchester
The virtual event will also provide opportunities for businesses in attendance to make pledges about how they plan to support young people aged 11 to 30, such as through work placements and work experience opportunities or apprenticeship schemes.
The more opportunities that can be gathered for young people, the more they can be supported into existing programmes and help open more young eyes to what Greater Manchester businesses have to offer.
The event is free to attend, book your place here.
