Stockport residents are being encouraged to take up the Dry January challenge, and give up alcohol for 31 days after the festive period.
Dry January participants can also sign-up to a brand new online game, and access a wealth of support and knowledge to help monitor their progress throughout the month.
The game, which will launch tomorrow, on 1st January 2015, includes an interactive quiz, an online mocktail bar with alcohol-free recipes as well as calorie and units-saved counters.
By taking part in the game, participants will help Marty the Martian save up alcohol units throughout January to fuel his ship and make it home, unlocking a number of awards and challenges along the way.
New research shows that participants who complete the Dry January challenge are now drinking less, and also drinking in less harmful ways.
Councillor John Pantall, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said:
“I’m urging the local community to participate in the Dry January challenge. It’s an opportunity for us all to reflect on our attitudes towards alcohol and check how it is affecting our health and wellbeing.
“Alcohol is related to many health conditions and diseases, which can affect not only those who are dependent on alcohol, but also those who drink at or above the recommended limits regularly.”
The game will be accessible via www.dryjanuary.net with participants being able to share their rewards and trophies through Facebook.
