Remembrance day services in Stockport and commemorative events will be taking place on Armistice Day, Saturday 11th November 2017 and Remembrance Sunday, 12th November 2017.
Stockport Council will join the Royal British Legion in observing a two-minute silence on Armistice Day, Saturday 12th November. At precisely 11.00am, the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Linda Holt, will observe the silence on the steps of Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery, Wellington Road South, Stockport.
To mark the beginning and end of the silence (at 11.00am and 11.02am respectively) maroon rockets will be launched from the civic complex. The sound should be heard for up to two miles away, and residents and shoppers should not be alarmed.
On Remembrance Sunday, the Mayor will lead the borough in paying respects in the Civic Act of Remembrance on the steps of Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery.
At precisely 11.00am there will be a two-minute silence, starting with the Last Post. Following prayers and hymns, and a reflection given by The Bishop of Stockport, The Right Reverend Libby Lane, wreaths will be laid on the steps of the War Memorial.
The Mayor is asking local residents to support the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal which provides the main source of funds to maintain the Royal British Legion’s many welfare and benevolent schemes.
Councillor Alex Ganotis, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“This is a key opportunity to honour servicemen and women of this country and the Commonwealth who paid the ultimate price. I’d encourage Stockport residents to join us in remembering them.”
