Community Computers, a scheme that provides refurbished digital devices to digitally excluded Stockport residents, has revealed how they aim to ensure that rising livings costs are not a barrier to their work.
Throughout May, their team of volunteers are refurbishing and fully licensing laptops and desktop PCs to provide them back into the community from as little as £59. They are working closely with Stockport Council to support those on low income to get online and be supported to do so.
Chris Bennett, Project Manager:
“Community Computers has decided to reduce the cost of our low-income technology for May 2022. The cost of living is continuing to go up and we know that people are starting to feel the pinch. We know how difficult some people are finding things, so we have reduced the cost of laptops from £99 to £79 and Desktops from £69 to £59. Our aim is to try and make device more accessible to those on a low income at a time where prices only seem to be going up. This price reduction ends May 31st, 2022, so now is the ideal time to get in touch and speak to us about how we can help.”
Community Computers is reliant on incoming the generous donations of IT, particularly laptops and desktop PCs, but also smart phones, ipads and other equipment (listed on their website).
The project is calling out to Stockport’s residents and businesses to support families and individuals that are digitally excluded by donating their unwanted IT equipment to the project for reuse, repair and recycling. By donating IT to be re-used back into the community, this not only prevents electronic waste from entering landfill, but prevents carbon from the manufacturing process of new IT. Their robust data destruction process ensures that all data is securely wiped from devices, and all hazardous materials are also properly disposed.
