A record number of people are now in work, according to latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
There are now 30.79m people in work and, from July to September, unemployment fell by 115,000. In the same period, the number of people in work grew by 112,000.
Locally, over 300 more people in Stockport have a job now than a year ago, with an extra 40 in a job in the last month alone.
Office of National Statistics figures show unemployment fell by 115,000 in the last quarter. Between July and September unemployment dropped to 1.96 million – the 18th consecutive quarterly fall. Earnings, excluding bonuses, also rose by 1.3% in the year to September, ahead of the 1.2% Consumer Prices Index inflation rate.
Employment now stands at a record high of 30.8 million, with 1.7 million new jobs created since the Liberal Democrats entered Government.
Commenting on the figures, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander said:
“Britain is in the fast lane of job creation. The British economy has created over 1.7 million new jobs since we formed the coalition in 2010, pushing total employment to a record high of 30.79M.
“On average, that’s a new job created every minute of every 24hr working day. But these welcome figures are so much more than mere numbers. Every job created helps someone build or secure a livelihood. This, combined with the news that wages (excluding bonuses) are now rising faster than inflation, is real progress in building the stronger economy and fairer society that we aspire to.”
