Planning permission is being sought to build 10 retail units and two drive-through food and drink outlets on Stanley Green Trading Estate following the demolition of the Armadillo self-storage facility.
Demolition of the Armadillo self-storage facility took place following severe fire damage to the building after a blaze in February 2022. While planning permission was granted in 2023 to construct a replacement self-storage facility, site owners, Orbit Investments, part of Wilmslow-based Emerson Group, are now seeking a retail-led use for the plot, alongside a smaller self-storage facility.
If approved, the scheme would add over 47,000 sq ft of principally trade counter-style employment space to the Stanley Green area, alongside an over 135,000 sq ft self-storage unit, and would add to the more than 100 commercial businesses along the A34 corridor at Stanley Green in Stockport, and across the border into Cheshire East at Handforth Dean.
Estimates by Maddox Planning, which have prepared the planning submission on behalf of Orbit Investments, expect the site to support around 100 jobs during the construction phase, and up to 167 full-time equivalent jobs once fully occupied. The planning statement also estimates the scheme could add as much as £12.9 million to the local economy.
