Plans have been submitted for a 17 storey apartment block of 76 homes to be built on the site of The George pub in Stockport town centre.
Developers, Provincial Land, are proposing demolishing the existing pub, which has been closed since 2017, on the corner of Heaton Lane and the A6 Wellington Road, constructing a block of 76 one- and two-bedroom apartments on the plot. The scheme will also include a commercial or co-working space on the ground and upper-ground floors, while residents will also benefit from a roof terrace and communal kitchen garden.
No car parking spaces have been included as part of the plans, although 76 bike storage spaces will be included in the building’s basement, with developers noting the site’s proximity to the town’s new bus interchange, set to open in March 2024, as well as easy links to Manchester city centre via the 192 bus service on Wellington Road, and the railway station.
Designs for the scheme, prepared by Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, proposes 64 one-bedroom apartments, along with a further 12 two-bedroom apartments on the building’s upper floors. While only one of the larger flats will have private outdoor space, all apartments include a ‘Winter garden’ dual aspect space on the corners of the building that aim to maximise natural light, recommended for use as a home office or quasi-outdoor space. Residents will also benefit from a roof terrace with a yoga lawn and outdoor community kitchen garden.
The scheme, if approved, would be among Stockport’s tallest buildings and comparable in height to neighbouring office block, Regent House.
It will sit alongside a number of large scale apartment buildings currently under construction nearby as part of Stockport MDC’s redevelopment of the Town Centre West area. Developments currently under construction include Cityheart’s build-to-rent scheme at Stockport Interchange, due to welcome residents in Spring 2024, as well as the regeneration of Weir Mill by Capital&Centric.
