Stockport’s new Apprentceship store was officially opened on Monday 13th January in a cermony attended by members of Stockport Council amd local MP Andrew Stunell.
Commenting, Andrew (above 2nd right) said:
“I am delighted that Stockport’s great success in the recent campaign to get 100 apprentices recruited in 100 days has been followed up with this amazing new shop promoting apprenticeships to both employers and would-be apprentices.
“We had offers of more than 200 places from local employers – double our target, and providing a brilliant start for young people across the town. Now this shop can make sure the help is expanded even more. It is the first of its kind in the country, and already other areas are asking to come and see how it’s done – another Stockport first.”
Across the country there were over 1.5 million apprenticeship starts since 2010, half a million of these were in 2012/13. In Hazel Grove constituency well over 2,500 apprenticeships have been started since 2010.
The new facility located in Stockport Exchange (formerly Grand Central) aims to encourage young people to consider apprenticeships. It will advertise available apprenticeships and young people can apply immediately for the ones which attract their interest.
Services available at the Apprenticeship Store include:
- Helping young people to sign up to the national apprenticeship website;
- Creating a professional CV;
- Helping young people with interview techniques to ensure they are as professional as possible to perspective employers;
- Enabling young people to gain an insight into the role of an apprentice by talking to apprentices employed by Stockport Council.
The Apprenticeship Store is located in Stockport Exchange, next to the Life Leisure Gym at Grand Central Pools and opposite the multiplex cinema. It is open from Monday to Friday, 10:00am-4:30pm.
