NEW HEALTH AND WELLBEING STRATEGY IN STOCKPORT NHS STockport, Stockport Council and partner organisations have pledged to help keep local residents healthy, well and living independently. The partners, the Council, NHS Stockport, Stockport LINK, Public Health and other local organisations have produced a new Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for 2012 to 2015.
The strategy was developed following a consultation with local people and interested groups who were asked about their health and wellbeing priorities.
Their feedback helped to shape the strategy which focuses on supporting choice, independence, health and wellbeing for all, including Stockport’s most vulnerable children, adults and their carers.
The key themes in the strategy are:
- Early intervention with children and families
- Physical activity and healthy weight
- Mental wellbeing
- Alcohol
- Prevention and maximising independence
- Healthy ageing and quality of life for older people

Planned follow up work includes the production of an `outcomes framework’ to help drive progress on the strategy, which will be monitored by the recently established Health and Wellbeing Board.
Dr Ranjit Gill, Chief Clinical Officer, NHS Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s good news for the people of Stockport that organisations in the borough are now working together to find ways of helping residents keep healthy and happy. If organisations like the Council, NHS Stockport and Public Health pool their vast experience, knowledge and skills we have a greater chance of reaching our goals and creating a sustainable and effective programme that will make a genuine difference to people’s lives.”
Councillor John Pantall, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing said, “I’m pleased we were able to develop this strategy following extensive consultation with local people. I strongly believe people living in the borough should get involved with matters that ultimately affect them. This can make a huge difference to their lives and the lives of their family and friends.”
John Leach, Chair of the Stockport LINk, said: “It is imperative that local people have a say on the decisions that are made about their care. This strategy is a prime example of local services working closely with members of the community to produce information that will benefit us all.”
