Following the success of the ‘Future World of Work’ careers talk for schools and colleges in Stockport as part of National Careers Week, Stockport Council has revealed plans to establish a regular forum that will bring together education providers and other stakeholders to support young people in the borough to transition from education to the world of work.
The move was announced in a letter to education providers and careers leaders by Stockport Council’s Head of Economy, Work and Skills, Richard Mortimer. The new forum will bring together the extensive careers education, information, advice and guidance resources offered by Stockport Jobs Match with a group for careers sector colleagues in Stockport launched earlier this year by Greater Manchester-wide organisation Bridge GM.
The purpose of the new forum will be to share economic and labour market data with careers and education professionals in the borough, help boost the careers offer provided by local schools and colleges and connect them with local employers, and provide a central hub for the education sector to feedback to Stockport Council.
This new forum will support the Government’s wider skills and careers strategy and ensure every young person in Stockport receives high-quality guidance to make informed decisions about their future. It will also enable schools, colleges and training providers a space to feedback on activities, and create opportunities for networking and collaboration.
The first meeting is expected to take place on May 17th from 3.30pm to 4.30pm via Microsoft Teams, with future forums taking place every half term.
Careers leaders in the borough are expected to receive a formal invitation to the forum in the coming days, along with an agenda, and are encouraged to share with the council any suggestions of items for upcoming meetings.
