Comic store, Wow Comix, has taken 721 sq ft of space at Merseyway shopping centre in Stockport.
The neighbourhood comic shop which opens this Saturday (28 September) – coinciding with the centre’s free The Comicon-Way event – will stock a selection of British and American comics, novels and books along with posters, mugs, T-shirts, models, collectables and games.
Wow Comix, which started out in Stockport Market Place, is relocating from existing premises in the town’s Underbanks to Merseyway.
The new store is one of four Wow Comix stores across the North West with other stores located in Sale, Bury and Afflecks Palace in Manchester.
James Kington from CBRE, asset manager for Merseyway, which is owned by Stockport Council said:
“It’s fantastic to see a North West retailer which started out trading within the Market Place evolve and become part of the town’s primary retail offering. Wow Comix’s new location gives them a prominent position within Merseyway, helping them benefit from the centre’s footfall and growing their customer base.”
John Webster, co-founder of Wow Comix with business partner Wayne Thompson said:
“We are delighted to be moving into Merseyway. This represents the next stage in the growth and development of our business here in Stockport. We look forward to seeing new customers as well as many old friends from our time in the market and Little Underbank.”
Councillor David Meller, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, added:
“The fact that Wow Comix are relocating their business to Merseyway shows real confidence in the town centre and our exciting plans. Improvement work will soon begin at Merseyway, as well as the recent announcement that work will soon start to repurpose the property left vacant by M&S. They are joining Merseyway at a great time and I wish them well in this next chapter of their business.”
Merseyway’s The Comicon-Way event takes place this Saturday (28 September) from 9am – 5pm. Free to attend, comic fans can jump on a Star Wars Speeder Bike, snap a photo by platform 9 ¾, meet Optimus Prime and Hulkbuster and see the popular 1969 Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazzard film, General Lee. Three Transformers cars will also be on display and visitors can shop the latest comic merchandise from a variety of pop-up stalls throughout the day.
