Lisa Smart, Prospective MP for Hazel Grove is celebrating this week’s announcement of a £350,000 grant for a study to assess the case for building the A555 Hazel Grove By-pass through to the M60 at Bredbury. It comes just a week after the first sod was cut on the route from the A6 in Hazel Grove through to the Airport.
The grant announcement was made by Liberal Democrat minister Danny Alexander on a flying visit to Stockport on Thursday, and will allow the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to commission the work needed to update figures last prepared over a decade ago.
Lisa Smart, Prospective MP for Hazel Grove, said –
“I am delighted that our hard work and lobbying on behalf of local residents fed up with congestion and pollution has finally paid off. This brilliant news, coming when work on site on the first phase is just starting, means we now have a real chance to get the whole of this vital project planned and built.
“I have made the case for the road to Ministers every time they visit. It will improve safety for all road users, cut congestion, and make Bredbury, Romiley and Hazel Grove healthier.”
In his announcement the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, confirmed that the government is providing the money for a study to assess the economic and financial case for the new road, with proper consideration of environmental impacts, and asking the Combined Authority to undertake it.
