Mobike is coming to Stockport! From next week the distinctive orange Mobikes will be available to Stockport residents, in response to high demand for the scheme since it launched in Greater Manchester last year.
Starting on Monday 12th March, an initial 200 Mobikes will be available in Stockport, gradually increasing to 1000, as the scheme develops. Stockport will initially host 15 approved Mobike Preferred Locations (MPLs) in strategic hubs across the area. This will allow people living in Manchester, Salford and Stockport, to cycle more easily to and from the different areas.
Mobike’s expansion follows the publication in February of a report by Greater Manchester’s cycling and walking commissioner, Chris Boardman, asking Mayor Andy Burnham for a £1.5bn spending to make the region one of the best places in the world to cycle and walk.
The report also asks that more than 700 miles of safe cycle lanes be produced over the 10 next years, and that the streets’ design be changed to make them safer for cyclists.
Steve Pyer, UK General Manager for Mobike, commented:
We’re very proud of our track record in Manchester. It was the first UK and European city we launched in, and the first one that witnessed Mobikes truly becoming part of European’s daily lives. The support from people, local authorities, businesses and institutions alike has been extremely encouraging, and the Mobike Stockport expansion is a natural evolution of that. We’re very happy to continue our contribution to Greater Manchester’s cycling and environmental targets by giving people access to more bikes, in more places”.
Mobike will continue to work with the council and stakeholders to develop bike sharing in the city.
Councillor Sheila Bailey, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said:
I welcome the fact that Mobike is coming to Stockport. They will give local people and visitors more choice when making journeys around the town centre.”
