Stockport shoppers have donated over £2,700 worth of shopping vouchers for Ukrainian refugees arriving in the borough through the Merseyway #StandWithUkraine Giving Tree.
The initiative is a collaboration between the shopping centre and the Stockport Ukrainian Club, with visitors to the centre invited to donate gift vouchers from local businesses. Blue and yellow gift tags hanging from a giant, white tree provided the names of stores where gift vouchers were available for purchase. The Stockport Ukrainian Club will distribute the vouchers to those escaping conflict in their homeland to help them purchase the necessities they need to settle into life in the borough.
Hundreds of local shoppers took part in the campaign, donating a variety of vouchers from different stores including Bambinos, Boots, Waterstones, JD Sports, Sterling Meats and Greggs, ranging from £5 to £114.
Centre Manager, Victoria Nichol said:
“Merseyway wanted to do something to show our support to all the families arriving in Stockport, but most-importantly, provide them with the freedom of shopping for their own essentials in our town centre. It’s important that we make each person feel welcome in our town, and we’re overwhelmed with the level of participation in this community-led campaign. Once again, we’re deeply touched by the generosity of our shoppers, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part”.
Brand Chair at Stockport Ukrainian Club, Alexandra Poluzyn said:
“On behalf of Stockport Ukrainian Club, I’d like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the people of Stockport. I can’t believe how generous each person has been. I’m positive every recipient will be incredibly grateful to receive each voucher.”
