September was Cycle to Work Month and, in conjunction with this national initiative, Transport for Greater Manchester has also been running their own Better by Cycle campaign.
A combination of a commitment to stay fit, extensive TV coverage and the recent fine weather has encouraged staff at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s (MDT-UK) UK Headquarters in Hazel Grove to support these campaigns.
Since the beginning of the month, one in eight members of MDT-UK’s staff have literally ‘got on their bikes’ and have been able to check on their progress by way of Better by Cycle’s on-line portal. So far more than 150 journeys have been made and more than 1,000 miles covered – a distance further than Land’s End to John o’ Groats!
Apart from the health and financial benefits, the carbon impact is also significant: the average saving of 237kg CO2 is equivalent to two years’ worth of e-mails or 445 miles driving in a car.
