Plans for a new leisure centre and community hub in Marple are moving forward following a public engagement process on possible designs.
GT3 Architects and Stockport Council received largely positive feedback on proposals to deliver new facilities in Marple. The new community hub will replace the existing library as well as the pool, which has been closed due to health and safety concerns since 2018.
The majority of respondents to the consultation expressed a preference for a design option which incorporated health and community facilities alongside the library and leisure centre. Preferred plans also incorporate Hollins House into the scheme.
A dedicated youth survey also showed preference for a fitness offer and community offer with areas to socialise and practise hobbies. A children’s offer such as outdoor adventure playground and pool hall play equipment was also supported in the consultation process.
The architects on the scheme are now working to include preferred elements from the public engagement into the final designs, which will also aim to address other concerns raised about the development.
Subject to funding of the scheme being approved, a further consultation on designs will take place ahead of a planning application on the Marple leisure centre project.
