One of MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Ltd’s (MDT-UK) largest projects currently underway is the supply of the company’s VP185 engine to a major customer in Taiwan.
The project is being managed by MDT-UK’s staff in Stockport and, whilst the engine itself is manufactured by MDT-UK’s site in Colchester, it is being fitted into the new vessels by a shipyard in Taiwan.
Difficulties in transporting some parts from Stockport to Taiwan threatened to delay the completion of the current vessel build by four days however, thanks to a willing volunteer from Stockport, this delay was prevented.
Step forward 21-year old Apprentice Guy McKinley who agreed to hand carry these urgent parts out to Taiwan literally at a moment’s notice. A trip home to collect his passport and a change of clothes and Guy was off on a 24-hour journey from Manchester Airport with a 16-hour turnaround before returning home.
Well done Guy – this really is an example of someone going that extra mile. Or in Guy’s case 10,752, give or take an odd one!
