Stockport Gin have relauched a limited edition gin, inspired by Stockport County manager, Danny Bergara, to raise funds for the club’s Kits By County initiative.
Working alongside the Stockport County Community Trust, for every bottle of Bergara Gin that is sold, Stockport Gin will be making a donation to the Trust’s Kits by County fund. The initiative aims to ensure that every child across the borough is not excluded from physical education in school and has access to a PE kit regardless of financial circumstances.
The Stockport distillery’s Bergara Gin was originally launched alongside the Stockport County Supporters Cooperative to raise funds for the Danny Bergara statue at Edgeley Park. Named for the club’s Uruguayan manager in the early 90s, the gin features flavours of South America and is distilled with yellow passion fruit, feijoa and yerba mate tea.
The label, depicting Danny and a range of iconic players who featured under him at Edgeley Park during his tenure from 1989-95, was designed by local artist Ric Pennington.
Stockport County Community Trust launched Kits by County in 2024 to to encourage more local school children to access the benefits of physical education, become more active and engaged in sport. Feedback from teachers at local primary schools, report an increasing number of pupils sitting out PE lessons because they didn’t possess an appropriate kit – often due to pressures on the family purse – and were embarrassed about borrowing items from the school’s lost property box.
The initial distribution saw more than 3,000 sets of free PE kits being donated across the borough, and now over fifty primary schools across Stockport have signed up to the scheme.
Bergara Gin relaunched on Saturday 29th November on the Stockport Gin website, while a limited number of bottles were also made available to purchase at Edgeley Park after the game against Barnsley that weekend.
20% from every bottle of Bergara Gin sold will be sent to the Kits by County fund.
