The first competition of the ‘Manchester Weight Lifting Series’ at Life Leisure’s Houldsworth Village Gym in Reddish has been declared a great success after phenominal interest!
When the results and photos from the day were posted to Facebook late on Sunday, the post received over 4,600 hits in just a few hours.
Andreas Michaelas, BWL Regional Development Officer described the day as ‘awesome’ and added:
“The day ran smoothly which is always a bonus when you are the organiser and it’s a launch event! There was an extremely high standard of lifting on the day, with only one failed lift throughout the competition. As this was a team event with both beginner and advanced categories the event displayed great camaraderie and support for each other throughout.
He continued:
“I must thank all the volunteers and competitors who made the day such a success and we are really looking forward to the next event being held in January 2015, where we are expecting many more teams to take part.”

The series is team based and is designed for anyone and everyone, from beginners through to advanced lifters, with four categories – male beginner and advanced and female beginner and advanced with teams consisting of 3 people. The series does not cover complete lifts; it just focuses on the ‘clean’ element of lifting. As this is a team event, all lifts count towards the team total.
Life Leisure and British Weight Lifting were also delighted to raise £340 for the David Hopkins Foundation. The charity benefits people across the local community enabling children and adults from any background to become more active and participate in their chosen activity.
Chris Scott, General Manager at Life Leisure said:
“We were really pleased to see both competitors and spectators out in force at Houldsworth Village enjoying the competition. We think it will really encourage people from all over the area to give it a go. Weight lifting is a great way to take part in sport, but you can also include it as part of your general fitness activities, and you will get a lot of support and help along the way”.
Two further competitions will be held in January and March 2015.
