Stockport Council are delivering a fully funded employability programme to benefit both employees and employers, designed to help people in Stockport who are already in work to progress in the careers and for employers to build a skilled workforce thus increasing staff retention and productivity.
The In Work Progression Programme can also help working individuals in Stockport who want to progress elsewhere or who are perhaps looking to move jobs and maybe pursue a new career path and as well as work with individuals who wish to progress elsewhere and support their employability.
‘In Work Progression’ Key Worker Stephanie Preston explains:
“We only work with people who are already employed, either living or working in Stockport, but want to change something about their current job situation. It could be that they would like to increase their hours, get a more stable contract, progress with their current employer or maybe move into a completely different role requiring different skills and qualifications.
“We also work to support employers and help them to unlock the potential of their workforce to progress within their organisations. We offer tailored advice on training and development pathways and one-to-one support, all fully by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.“Through the programme, employers have an opportunity to increase in staff retention, build a skilled workforce and enhance productivity.”
Susan (not her real name) has already experienced the positive impact the In Work Progression programme has had on her working life:
“Just to give you a quick update since we last spoke; I updated my CV based on our conversation and have applied for a few positions. Thanks to you, today I had an interview with EF Language for a Summer Activity Leader role, and they said they’ll let me know the result next Friday.”
Susan did get the job and later updated the team on her progress:
“I’ve now been working at EF for three weeks, and I’m really enjoying it. Recently, they also approached me about an additional role alongside the Activity Leader position. Because of my hospitality background, they think I could help with the accommodation side as well. Whether it happens or not, the fact that they already offered me another opportunity makes me very happy, because it shows they are satisfied with my work and trust my abilities.
“I also wanted to say that when both accounting and this role were options for me, your guidance helped me choose the path that truly matched my interests. I was never passionate about accounting; it was simply a safe option for me. You encouraged me to follow my interests while keeping time for my college studies and future plans.
“Most importantly, you gave me confidence in myself. You helped me believe that I could manage in an English-speaking environment, that I shouldn’t underestimate my abilities, and that I should allow myself to pursue the work I genuinely enjoy.
“Because of this path, I can now imagine a better future for myself, both in terms of my career and my place in society. I feel much more hopeful and motivated, and I’m very thankful for your guidance and support throughout this journey.
“I’m truly grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you again for everything.”
The In Work Progression employability programme is open to Stockport residents aged 18+ who have the right to work in the UK.
