Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is supporting the ambition for Greater Manchester to become the UK’s first ‘walking region’ as it works to transform their cycling and walking offer.
TfGM’s Sustainable Journeys Team are working closely with Chris Boardman (GM Walking and Cycling Commissioner) to deliver this ambitious vision and want to encourage people to take part in the GM Walking Festival in May 2019
A new GM Moving Walking Region Programme aims to empower a movement through the creation of a walking culture on a scale not seen anywhere else, where walking becomes a normal part of everyday life. The ambition through this project is to make Greater Manchester the first ‘walking region’ in the UK and includes supporting mass walking events and local walking initiatives.
The new walking programme has presented an opportunity for TfGM to work in partnership with GMMoving to continue to deliver a walking festival for 2019.
“We are excited to be able to continue the festival, building on the success from previous years, and to support the ambitions around increasing walking across Greater Manchester and promoting all the groups and organisations who deliver led walks in GM.”
The 2019 Greater Manchester Walking Festival
The Greater Manchester Walking Festival 2019 kicks off on 1st May and runs to 31st May 2019.
During the month of May, TfGM and GMMoving aim to showcase and publicise all the great walking opportunities and groups there are in Greater Manchester and to encourage people to walk more and more often.
The festival has been running for 4 years with this year’s festival attracting over 5000 participants on a led walk in Greater Manchester.
“It’s a great way to promote how physical health, mental wellbeing and social and community development can all benefit from group walking as well as raising the profile of your organisation.
“Drawing upon the expertise of the many walking groups in Greater Manchester, we are inviting organisations and providers of walks to submit details of any led walks which are free, open to the public and take place in the Greater Manchester boundary area in May 2019.”
