Great Egerton street car park and Merseyway ramp is to close as Bridgefield Street’s Redrock retail and leisure development begins to take shape.
The remainder of the Great Egerton Street car park will be closed from 15th February as well as the ramp up to the Merseyway/Debenhams rooftop car park from Bridgefield Street.
But, in order to encourage visitors to continue to visit the town centre and to use the alternative access into this car park and other town centre car parks, the Council has instructed NCP to offer 2 hours free parking in Merseyway car park during the first week of the closure from 15th February to 21st February 2016.
The works are taking place as part of the Council’s Investing in Growth development programme together with the Town Centre Access Plan designed to improve access and ease congestion in and improve access to Stockport town centre.
A new multi-storey car park will be built linking to the Merseyway/Debenhams rooftop car park via a new link bridge. Work is expected to be completed on the Redrock development in September 2017.
Councillor Martin Candler, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Supporting Places, said:
“We apologise in advance for the inconvenience but please bear with us as we are improving Stockport town centre for everyone. We would like to remind residents that during this time all of Stockport’s shops and businesses in the town centre are open as usual for everyone to visit.”
Merseyway car park will still be accessible from St Petersgate and Great Underbank, and there is still plenty of other car parking available for visitors in the town centre. Full information about car parks and parking in Stockport is available online at www.stockport.gov.uk/parking
