Business Secretary urges organisations to take action ahead of end to Brexit transition
There is now less than one month to go until the end of the transition period. It is vital that businesses act now to avoid disruptions to operations in the new year. Regardless of a business’ size or sector, it will need to comply with new regulations from 1st January ahead of the UK’s new relationship with the European Union. There will be changes to:
- the way you import and export goods;
- the process for hiring people from the EU;
- the way you provide services in EU markets.
The action necessary will vary from business to business. There are a number of government resources available to help determine what action is needed.

MEN: Asda waiving £340m in business rates relief throughout pandemic period
Supermarket giant Asda said it is waiving government relief on business rates for a year introduced last March as a key support measure to retailers hit by the pandemic. For the year to the end of March, 2021, the non-payment of business rates would have saved Asda £340m across its network of UK stores. However, it has confirmed that it is unilaterally waivng the support, saying that the UK Government and devolved administrations, although in Wales larger firms weren’t exempted from business rate reliefs, should redirect the money to support those most in need. Through the height of the pandemic Asda recruited over 22,000 additional staff, with no employees being furloughed.
BBC: Fake vaccine claims will be removed from Facebook & Instagram
The BBC reports that Facebook is accelerating its plans to remove ‘misleading and false information’ about Covid-19 vaccines across its platforms, including Instagram. The company added it was a continuation of its policy ‘to remove misinformation about the virus that could lead to imminent physical harm’ and included removing conspiracy theories which were known to be false. Facebook warned that it would take time to fully role out this change: ‘We will not be able to start enforcing these policies overnight’.

Statement from Stockport’s Director of Public Health:
This week we have had the incredibly positive news that the Pfizer vaccine for coronavirus is safe, effective, of high quality and has been approved for use in the UK. The NHS has planned extensively to deliver the largest vaccination programme in our history and the roll out will begin next week. Our most vulnerable residents, and care and health staff will be among the first people to be called. We know that it will take months for the vaccine to be rolled out to all the priority groups. With that in mind I would ask you to wait to be called for the vaccine, if you are in an eligible group; and once you are called, I urge you to take up the vaccine.
The other good news this week is that our rates continue to fall. Stockport residents have shown care, kindness and dedication in protecting each other, through the steps taken every day to slow the spread of this disease. Thank you for all the commitment you have shown so far in driving down our rates. As it will take a few months for the vulnerable population to be vaccinated it’s as important as ever that we remain vigilant and stop the spread of the virus. The case rates are *123 per 100,000, are occurring in all 21 wards and we are still seeing around *52 new cases in the borough each day. The coronavirus infection rate across the whole of Greater Manchester has continued to fall, according to the latest figures from Public Health England and reported in the Manchester Evening News. In Stockport the rate has now fallen to 123 while Tameside, Stockport and Trafford also have lower transmission rates than the average for England as a whole at 127. In London – Tier 2 – the rate is currently 157.2
Merseyway Workshop opens offering DIY community space
The Merseyway Workshop, a DIY community space, has opened in a former retail unit in the shopping precinct, providing free and accessible creative workshops, a rolling exhibition space and retail opportunities for local makers. A collaboration between design team Easy Peel Studio and social enterprise Plastic Shed, has seen a 600 sq ft former shoe shop in Merseyway shopping centre transformed into a free and open space for the community Work began on repurposing the unit in July 2020.
Greater Manchester proposes reforms to bring buses under regional control
Greater Manchester is launching a further public consultation to get a wide range of views on its proposals to reform the bus market in light of the findings of a new report on the impact of Covid-19. The consultation runs until midnight on Friday 29 January 2021. Under franchising, bus services would be brought under local control. GMCA would coordinate and invest in the bus network based on the services passengers need. The bus operators would be contracted by GMCA to run the services.

There are a number of business grant schemes available that cover different periods of time and different situations, such as being under national lockdown.

The Council currently has two live business grant schemes – both for businesses that have a business rates liability, and they are for the following circumstances:

Payments made to those venues that were require to close in March 2020 and have remained closed since, e.g.: Nightclubs. Payment will be made for the period 1st to 4th November. Eligible businesses will be entitled to receive a National Lockdown grant from 5th November 2020.
The Council’s Discretionary Grant Schemes for businesses are now open for applications.
There are two schemes available for eligible, qualifying businesses:
- The Local Restrictions Support Grant (for open businesses), and;
- The Additional Restrictions Grant (for the latest period of National Restrictions from 04/11/20 and 02/12/20)

Hospitality venues in England are now legally required to enforce the rule of 6 or face a fine of up to £4,000.
Designated businesses and organisations, including hospitality, close contact services and leisure venues, will also be legally required to log details of customers, visitors and staff for NHS Test and Trace and required to display official NHS QR code posters under law
