CDL is supporting Stockport Lacrosse Club in its Quest for European Glory. The Stockport based technology firm, CDL, based at Kings Reach, has stepped in with funds to enable Stockport Lacrosse Club to compete in the European Club Championships when they take place in Ghent, Belgium, this week (September 7th – 8th).
The Stockport team are the reigning national and premiership champions and have missed out on competing at European level in recent years, due to lack of funding to get to the tournament. They last attended in 2009 when the tournament was hosted in England – and when they lifted the cup.
The Cale Green based side are hoping to repeat their success in Ghent, entering the tournament as favourites but facing tough opposition from German and Czech teams, who are also tipped for the title.
Peter Larkham, Head of Human Resources for CDL, said:
“We learned of the Stockport team’s dilemma as we have hired the Stockport Lacrosse and Cricket Club as the venue for our summer barbecue for the last couple of years. It seemed a shame for them to miss out on competing at European level so we were happy to step in and make up the funding shortfall. It’s also a great way of helping put Stockport on the map!”
Club captain and England international, Tom Gosnay, is looking forward to the challenge:
“Teams in Europe are improving every year, so we are under no illusion that it is going to be an easy ride, but we are confident that we have the players to bring back the title. It’s fantastic that we are going to have the chance to compete in this prestigious tournament.”
Stockport Lacrosse Club is the oldest existing club in the world, after being founded in 1876, on the same site where they play today. The team were undefeated in all competitions last season. The side is made up of 15 players, mostly from the Stockport area, ranging from 18 to 34 years of age, and many of whom represent England at international level.
