Last winter proved expensive for Insurance companies as the UK was battered by rain and strong gales and homes and businesses suffered from flood damage and loss of income.
Stockport based C&C Insurance Brokers have first-hand experience of the stress and inconvenience that winter weather damage can bring; as we prepare ourselves for the coming winter months we should not forget about protecting our homes from the cold weather too. Burst water pipes are one of the more common problems rendering some homes uninhabitable but prevention is better than a cure when it comes to water damage and the distress it can cause.
C&C’s managing director Malcolm Cooke reminds us that now is the time to act to ensure your home and your family are protected:
“Just a few simple steps will help to prevent damage and protect your home. This is a great checklist and now is the time to act rather than after the event!”
- Ensure all exposed water pipes and tanks in the loft are adequately and properly insulated.
- Inspect your cold water tank.
- Repair dripping taps.
- Be aware of where the main stop valve is and ensure that it can be turned on and off easily.
- If the overflow pipe is constantly dripping this is a sign that your system is in need of some maintenance. You should get this looked at immediately.
- If the heating system fails or makes loud noises during freezing conditions it could be a sign that a pipe is freezing. If this happens shut down the boiler and call a plumber as soon as possible. If you have home emergency with you insurance policy call them immediately for assistance.
- Leave your heating on low for 24 hours during freezing temperatures.
- If you are going to be away from your house while the weather is cold ask a friend or neighbour to check the house and keep the heating on.
- Keep room doors slightly open to allow the warm air to move around the house.
- Keep the hatch to the loft slightly ajar, this will stop overhead pipes and tanks from freezing.
- Ensure all fencing; sheds and garden furniture are secure.
- Ignoring a build-up of leaves in gutters can result in overflowing of water bringing damage to the home
- Check your insurance policy to ensure you have adequate cover in place should you need to make a claim for any damage caused due to bad weather.
- If you are going away remember to shut off the outside taps and drain any standing water to avoid outside pipes bursting.
