A specialist treatment centre at BMI Healthcare’s Alexandra Hospital has been recognised by Macmillan Cancer Support for its high standards of patient care.
The Richmond Suite is the only location in Greater Manchester to be awarded the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark this year.
Stockport’s Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Andrew Verdeille and Mrs Cleo Cundall, unveiled a plaque at a special ceremony to mark the achievement.
The Macmillan Quality Environment Mark is awarded to cancer care environments which meet a set of standards developed with over 400 patients and other stakeholders, including the Department of Health.
The Richmond Suite was assessed on all aspects of its environment and its services to patients, including the treatment and consultation rooms, accessibility, the welcome they are afforded, how staff communicate with them and the respect given for their privacy and dignity.
Assessors also measured the quality of the menus and meals, the suite’s cleanliness and patients’ ability to control things such as lighting and temperature. Patient feedback formed an important part of the process.
The Richmond Suite has nine bedrooms, six chemotherapy chairs, a coffee lounge and a patient drop-in area as well as consulting rooms and treatment rooms.
Macmillan Cancer Support says that intelligent, sensitive design improves the well-being of people with the illness.
Margaret Campbell, Richmond Suite ward manager said: “The Macmillan Quality Environment Mark is a prestigious award which follows a rigorous assessment, and we are delighted that the high levels of service we provide to patients and their families have been recognised in this way.
“We pride ourselves on exceptional patient care and will continue to develop our services working with Macmillan Cancer Support to ensure we continue to deliver the high standards of care and support.”
