The new partnership will lead to 30 paid vacancies in Greater Manchester this summer, the only apprenticeship opportunities in computer gaming in the North West looking to hone their skills in computer gaming artists, programming and designing.
A similar number is set to follow in early 2016 enabling more young people to get into this exciting and growing sector and complete either a one or two-year programme, in each case focusing on one of the three disciplines.
As well as receiving industry-leading training from PlaygroundSquad experts .. apprentices will work on commercial gaming projects for end users such as Sony and Electronic Arts. Students will be based at PlaygroundSquad’s UK HQ at the Sharp Project in East Manchester where, in addition to all the latest technology and software, they will have access to a café and high quality space to relax when not working.
Jonathan Bourne, managing director of Damar Training, said:
“Our focus at Damar is working with employers to develop high quality apprenticeships, particularly in sectors where there are skills gaps. PlaygroundSquad is an industry expert and an important part of Greater Manchester’s vibrant digital economy and we are excited to be able to support this next phase of their growth.”
Magnus Bjorkman, CEO of PlaygroundSquad UK, added:
“PlaygroundSquad focuses on giving our apprentices the best knowledge and skills to work in the game development industry, specialising in three different disciplines: game art, game design and game programming. Together with Damar Training, an experienced apprenticeship provider, we look forward to growing the game development industry in Greater Manchester.”
