Kingsmill producer, Allied Bakeries, is ramping up donations to communities in need in Stockport and across Greater Manchester
Via its long-standing FareShare partnership, Allied Bakeries are intending to get an additional 1,000 loaves per day out to the community during the latest Covid-19 lockdown.
This is on top of the 1,500 loaves per week that go to Stockport Council’s food donations programme, and over 1,000 that go direct to local food banks and charities, including Helping Hands Care Home in Warrington and Wythenshawe Food Bank.
FareShare has seen demand for food skyrocket, particularly among frontline organisations providing food to children and their families. A FareShare spokesperson said,
Thank you to Kingsmill for your ongoing work to deliver surplus bread to local communities. The loaves that you provide help us feed the most vulnerable people in Greater Manchester and across the UK, we are very grateful for your support.”
Carl Hampson, General Manager at Allied Bakeries Stockport, who bake Kingsmill, said
We’ve always taken pride in supporting our local communities here, and when the Covid-19 crisis hit in March last year it was our neighbours, friends and family stepping up to the frontline. That support hasn’t stopped and is now ramping up. There is an increasing need to keep the more vulnerable and needy fed throughout winter and we will continue to do so as much as we can.”
Cllr Elise Wilson, Leader of Stockport Council said,
It’s undoubtedly been a tough year for everyone, but the way the team at Allied Bakeries have stepped up to help people across our communities has been nothing short of remarkable.
“They – like many others during these difficult times – have shown compassion and generosity which will be remembered for years to come. This is a fantastic example of how a local business – in this case Allied Bakeries – the Council, and other community partners have come together to help local people in challenging circumstances.
“The support they have provided has, in many cases, proved to be invaluable to our residents – and for that I am truly thankful.”
The donations in Stockport are part of a business-wide effort by Kingsmill to support local communities across the whole of the UK, providing loaves and other bakery goods each week to local hospitals, ambulance services, schools, fire stations, police handling headquarters, care homes and charities creating food packs for the vulnerable and food banks. As a company, Allied Bakeries donated the equivalent of over 2.1 million meals UK-wide in 2020.
