Stockport Council is due to start construction works on A6 Wellington Road South between the junctions with Railway Road/John Street and Exchange Street/St Petersgate.
The works, which begin on Monday 20th May and will last for up to 26 weeks, will involve the following:
- Carriageway widening of Railway Road junction with A6 Wellington Road South to achieve dual departure lanes from Railway Road
- Carriageway widening of A6 Wellington Road South between Norbury Street and Wellington Street to enable construction of a central pedestrian refuge island within the A6 Wellington Road South. This island will be located opposite the entrance to Grand Central Leisure site to form a staggered puffin pedestrian crossing over the A6 Wellington Road South
- Relocation of the existing north and southbound bus stops to accommodate the above noted puffin crossing
- Upgrade of the following traffic signal junctions to include staggered pedestrian crossings over A6 Wellington Road South:
Railway Road / John Street signal junction
- Station Road / Wellington Street signal junction
- Exchange Street / St Petersgate signal junction
Upgrade of the existing footway surfacing throughout the scheme extent to match existing materials along the east footway (e.g. footway outside Stockport Library)
- The final phase of the works will include resurfacing of the A6 Wellington Road South carriageway and affected side junctions throughout the scheme extent
Throughout the works through routes for all traffic will be maintained during the working day. Towards the end of the project night-time diversions will be implemented for southbound traffic only to enable carriageway resurfacing. We anticipate the duration of the night time diversions will be from 8.00pm to 6.00am Monday to Thursday night over a period of two weeks.
As part of traffic management plans a temporary suspension of the right turn manoeuvre into Station Road from A6 Wellington Road South will be necessary throughout the works. Alternative access for southbound vehicles into Station Road will remain available via a right turn into Railway Road returning past Stockport Rail Station.
Closure of the existing north and southbound bus stops adjacent to the Grand Central Leisure site on A6 Wellington Road South will be necessary during some occasions to undertake the works. At these times TfGM will provide temporary bus stops outside and opposite the Stockport Town Hall Building on A6 Wellington Road South.
