There have been over 4.2 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK and sadly almost 126,000 people have died. Over 25 million people have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine. The average number of daily infections in the UK has fallen with strict lockdown measures just starting to ease. A further 5,758 confirmed cases across the UK were announced by the government yesterday, down from 5,926 cases last Wednesday. The number of tests every day has risen by roughly 500,000 since the start of March as schools have been using rapid tests, even among those displaying no symptoms. This additional testing has led to on average an additional 1,000 new cases being found each day.

Hundreds of BBC roles to move to the North and Midlands
The BBC has this afternoon confirmed it will relocate high profile national journalism jobs from London to the regions, including to the Midlands, the North West and Yorkshire. The broadcaster’s director general Tim Davie unveiled plans at an all staff-meeting this morning. Specialist journalism teams covering topics such as the environment, technology, and education will be relocated from London to new bases in Leeds, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow. In total, 400 jobs will move out of London.
40% revenue growth for Ocado as customers make “permanent shift to online grocery shopping”
Online grocery retailer Ocado has revealed an almost 40 per cent year-on-year revenue growth for the first quarter of the year. In its Q1 results published today, the firm has seen sales of £599m, compared with quarterly revenue of £428.8m in the same period of the previous year – a 39.7 per cent increase.
The group, which over the past 12 months has developed its joint venture with M&S as well as investing in customer fulfilment centres across the country, attributes the growth to the growing trend for online grocery shopping accelerated by the pandemic.
BBC: UK government faces questions after report of shortage of vaccines
The government is facing questions after the NHS warned of a reduction in supply of vaccines next month. Five million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine produced in India have been held up by four weeks.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock says UK is ahead of schedule to offer first dose to all over 50s by 15 April.
EU planning vaccine passport rollout before summer
A digital certificate to kick-start foreign travel should be given to citizens across the EU “without discrimination”, officials say. Vaccine passports have faced opposition from some EU member states over concerns they might be discriminatory. But the aim of these certificates is to enable anyone vaccinated against Covid-19, or who has tested negative or recently recovered from the virus, to travel within the EU.
The 27 member states will decide how they will be used.
More than 25 million people in the UK have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Significant milestone reached as almost half of all UK adults in the UK get the vaccine.

150 Greater Manchester public buildings benefit from decarbonisation fund
In total, the works are expected to support the creation or safeguarding of around 2,000 jobs throughout the city-region, and will support the goals of Greater Manchester’s Five Year Environment Plan, including becoming carbon neutral by 2038.
First Bee Network walking and cycling routes complete in Stockport
Work has completed on Stockport’s first Bee Network scheme, which will join with a walking and cycling routes across Greater Manchester, and has now opened. Stockport Council have completed an upgrade of a signal controlled pedestrian crossing in Cheadle Hulme that will make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists alike. The new ‘Sparrow’ crossing is a signal controlled parallel crossing that keeps pedestrians and cyclists separate as they cross and is one of the first of its kind in the UK.
Stockport to mark National Day of Reflection
Stockport Council is supporting a National Day of Reflection one year on since lockdown measures were first introduced in memory of those who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic. Organised by charity Marie Curie, the national day of remembrance will take place on Tuesday 23 March and will also show support for those who have lost loved ones in the past year. The Council will commemorate the day by remembering people who have lost lives and support those who have been bereaved. To honour this day, Stockport will be lighting up the Town Hall blue and green and flying the flag at half-mast. Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery will be lit up by rainbow lights in memory of those who have lost their lives. A virtual multi-faith event will also be taking place on Monday 22 March and show videos of prayers and statements from various organisations and faiths reflecting on the past year as part of the National Day of Reflection.

CORONAVIRUS GRANTS FOR BUSINESSES IN STOCKPORT:
Stockport Council expands eligibility for Discretionary Grant Schemes
Stockport Council has announced it is expanding its discretionary grant schemes to support a greater range of businesses affected by the pandemic.
The new Micro-business support scheme will see businesses outside of the hospitality, leisure and retail sectors become eligible for both the Stockport Additional Restrictions Grant scheme and the Local Restrictions Support Grant for Open Businesses, affecting organisations that were impacted during the lockdown from 5th November to 2nd December, and subsequent periods of lockdown. Support will be backdated to the first date of eligibility. The discretionary schemes allow councils to support businesses that have missed out on other support as they do not have a business rates liability. Stockport Council is adding a number of sectors to those already eligible for the schemes. Details here To be eligible for the Stockport Additional Restrictions Grant scheme bus also meet specific criteria – details here Businesses will need to be able to demonstrate that they have fixed property costs and demonstrate a loss in income as a result of the pandemic.

Please note: The Council has now received funding for the Local Restrictions Support Grant for Open Businesses scheme for the period following the end of the lockdown on 2nd December 2020.
A system to make automated repeat payments for qualifying businesses based on their initial applications is being used and so there is no need for businesses to reapply after their first application for the Local Restrictions Support Grant for Open Businesses scheme. Funds will be paid to businesses and an email will be sent to each business stating that in accepting the funding they are confirming that they meet the qualifying conditions and statements set out in the email.
If you have not yet applied for the Local Restrictions Support Grant for Open Businesses scheme, you will need to make an initial application before you can be considered to be eligible to receive any automatic payments for further qualifying periods. Further information on the schemes will be updated on the Stockport Council website.

Coronavirus Roadmap out of lockdown – what and when?
From 29 March:
- People will be allowed to meet outside, either with one other household or within the “rule of six”, including in private gardens
- The stay at home rule will end, but the government will urge people to stay local as much as possible
- Outdoor sport facilities will reopen, including golf courses and tennis and basketball courts, and formally organised outdoor sports can restart
- Weddings attended by up to six people can take place in any circumstances
Stage two (no earlier than 12 April):
– All shops allowed to open, along with close-contact services, including
hairdressers and beauty salons (including in people’s homes)
– Restaurants and pubs allowed to serve food and alcohol to customers sitting
outdoors
- Gyms and spas can reopen, as can zoos, theme parks, libraries and community centres
- Members of the same household can take a holiday in the UK in self-contained accommodation
- Weddings attended by up to 15 people can take place
Stage three (no earlier than 17 May):
- People can meet in groups of up to 30 outdoors
- Six people or two households can meet indoors
- Pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues can seat customers indoors
- Up to 30 people can attend weddings or other life events, like christenings
- Remaining outdoor entertainment, such as outdoor theatres and cinemas can open
- Indoor entertainment such as museums, theatres, cinemas and children’s play areas can open
- Performances and large events can restart, but with limits on audience numbers
- Hotels, hostels and B&Bs can reopen
- International leisure travel may resume
- Adult indoor group sports and exercise classes can restart
- Stage four (no earlier than 21 June):
- All legal limits on social contact will be removed
- No legal limits on the number of people who can attend weddings, funerals and other life events
- Nightclubs will be allowed to reopen

Repayment period for Bounce Back Loans extended to ten years
Businesses that took out government Bounce Back loans to help them through the Coronavirus crisis now have more time to repay. Companies will be contacted with options to extend the length of the loan from six to 10 years as part of a new ‘pay-as-you-grow’ initiative. The new proposals give businesses three new options:
1. Extending the length of the loan from six years to 10;
2. Making interest-only payments for six months, then repaying the principal on a phased basis with other interest-only periods;
3. Delaying repayments entirely for up to six months.
